FALL 2012
FROM THE PRESIDENT
T
he anxious anticipation of a new school year
faded away shortly after our first day of classes
on August 6, 2012. Much like other years,
we began with prayer and greetings and quickly
got to the work at hand, charting the course for
another fruitful year. This year, our “road mapwas
brought into clearer focus as we unveiled the new
statement of vision, mission, and core values for
the Academy. This collaborative process, begun in
April of last year, has refocused the attention of this school community
on the person of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word. Later in The Messenger
you will have the opportunity to enter into that new statement, hopefully
allowing it to rekindle a spark of faith in your heart.
In May, we launched a new strategic planning process to guide
the school’s decisions and resource allocations over the next ve years.
This broadly collaborative process is underway and promises to be very
benecial for the school’s future. From time to time all eective educational
institutions undertake the process of reviewing what has been, assessing
what is, and planning for what will be. And, so it is with IWA!
A few short weeks ago we broke ground on the rst phase of the
Enlighten, Inspire & Strengthen Campaign—the track and eld area
and soccer eld on Austin Street. This multi-phase, multi-million dollar
campaign will see the renovation of our Austin Street Athletic Complex
completed in January, the expansion of our Middle School athletic facilities
with a new gymnasium in phase two, and the long-hoped-for construction
of our Montessori Building thereafter, completing the expansion of our
Elementary Level. Each of the future projects depends on the success of
our ongoing campaign eorts.
It is an incredibly exciting time for the school, but it is daunting as
well; any investment in the future is, I believe. We have a history of doing
great things at IWA when we work together! We humbly ask for your
thoughts and prayers for the success of these endeavors, realizing that
“with God nothing is impossible” (Lk. 1:37).
There is so much in the past for which to give thanks! There is so
much yet to come for which we say YES! Thanks for being a part of a faith-
lled future for Incarnate Word Academy. May the upcoming Christmas
holiday remind us of the root from which all blessings ow, the Word
Incarnate, Jesus Christ.
Dear Friends,
Praised be the Incarnate Word !
Gratefully,
Charles D. Imbergamo
President
I
n 2011, The President’s Circle, an annual giving society,
was established to promote renewable and replaceable
unrestricted gifts that are significant in amount and help
ensure a successful campaign. Through annual commitments
beginning at $1,000, members of the President’s Circle set
the standard for giving at Incarnate Word Academy. Our
President’s Circle members know that the consistency of
their leadership is a commitment to excellence at Incarnate
Word Academy.
A huge thank you to those who have joined the 2012-2013

YEAR OF FAITH
Proudly Supports
Incarnate Word
Academy
Sebastian Villamil loads boxes of care packets
to be delivered to areas social service agencies.
Elementary Level students assemble care packets.
I
ncarnate Word Academy kicked off the “Year of Faith” with a
campus-wide service project to deliver over 330 care packets to
area social service agencies.
IWAs Elementary Level, Middle Level, and High School Level
students collected and assembled travel-sized items such as tooth-
brushes, toothpastes, shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and
more for the care packets on Monday, November 12, 2012.
“It was important because we were helping people that didnt
have the things that we have,” seventh grader Molly Flood said.
“I felt good about it.
High School Level students distributed the care packets with the
help of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament on
Wednesday, November 14, 2012.
Each care packet included a prayer card from students at
Incarnate Word Academy.
“Our whole campus helped get items for these people in need and
came together as a community for them,” senior Zack Martin said.
e number 330 – for the care packets – was created by adding:
100 years that the diocese is celebrating, 160 years that the Sisters
of the Incarnate Word have been in America, 50 years since Vatican
II and 20 years of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church.
Pope Benedict XVI announced the beginning of the global Year
of Faith on October 11, 2012 at St. Peter’s square at the Vatican. e
Year of Faith will continue until November 24, 2013.
Incarnate Word Academy is excited to begin the year with unity
and solidarity as we unite throughout the campus with service
projects and reflections.

We are committed to raising over $150,000 (35% of our Annual Giving Program
goal) at our Annual Gala. Become a Gala Sponsor, purchase individual tickets,
purchase a reverse rae ticket, make a cash donation or donate an item to our
live or silent auctions. Thank you in advance for your support of this important
mission. With your help, we know that the 2013 Gala will be a huge success !
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT !
Although we work diligently to make an Incarnate Word Academy education
possible for anyone committed to achieving it, tuition is still out of reach for many
Coastal Bend families. In addition, the ongoing need to invest in professional
development for faculty, facility and technology enhancements is ever growing.
All these require not only hard work but also investment above and beyond what
we collect in tuition each year. We want to continue to make an Incarnate Word
Academy education a reality for the children in our community.

during a school-wide presentation by Richard Guerry, the
executive director of the award-winning Institute for Re-

Guerry spoke to students about appropriate digital behavior, and
how to develop safe and responsible habits when online and while
using cell phones. He encouraged students to establish appropri-
ate values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors for responsible digital
decision making. He also emphasized that online and digital
activity is public and permanent.
In addition, the presentation educated students about the
different forms of cyber bullying and the misperception that
there is anonymity and privacy when using digital tools. e
presentation took place during National Bullying Prevention
Month in October. roughout the month of October, students
participated in classroom activities, created motivational posters,
hung orange ribbons on lockers, and students wore anti-bullying
wristbands that stated “Bullying Ends With Me.” Faculty and staff
participated in the awareness campaign by reading powerful
messages during the announcements to challenge students to
set a positive example for others on campus and throughout the
community.

What is “Open Work?”
Montessori Family Night Features
e Autonomous Learner
M
rs. Shockley is continuing her philosophy of
“Open Workin her fourth grade classroom
this year. “Open Work” is a great opportunity
for parents and grandparents to actively participate in the
classroom through enriching activities with the students.
As one parent observed, “I am not sure who has more fun in
‘Open Work’, me or my child!” Parents can bring skills from
their profession, or just a love of being with their children to
not only enlighten, inspire, and strengthen, but also add
a personal touch unique to Incarnate Word Academy.
O
n Wednesday, September 26. 2012, the fourth installment
of the Montessori Family Night focused on one of
Montessori’s ultimate aims, which is to develop autono-
mous learners. Dr. Maria Montessori’s son, Mario, sums it up:
“e motto of Montessori education is derived from the utterance
of a toddler, ‘Help me to do it myself.
is is even more important in our time in which information
and knowledge evolve at the speed of fiber optics. Students need
to be able to formulate questions, find sources of information, and
use their creativity to solve problems. How does this look within
the structure of our Montessori classrooms? We often hear how
the classroom looks like an office space. Children are diligently
working with self-chosen materials, arriving at an understanding
of concepts individually, and at their own pace. Students move
from one work station to the next without prompting from the
teacher, getting into the habit of an independent, continuous work
cycle. Children are grouped in three different ages and can draw
from each other’s experience and leadership.
Children are creative by nature and have a natural curiosity to
seek knowledge. Maria Montessori said it beautifully: “e child is
the father of the man.” Every morning, when the students arrive at
school, they go to work on one of the most important missions of
their lives—the development of themselves into the human beings
that God has called them to be. is work is done independently.
As a teacher, it is a privilege to witness such process. e develop-
ment of the student’s autonomy depends on a transformation of
the teacher from her conventional place in front of the class, into
the architect of a challenging, prepared environment. e teacher
is transformed from a lecturer into the role of a technician, a
scientist, and a saint.
ese are exciting times to be a learner, even more, to be an
autonomous learner. e rapid development of technology and
the connectivity that it allows has taken down the walls of the
classroom.” Now the classroom extends as far as you wish to take
it, changing the way students learn the skills they need to be ready
for the future.

continue having fun while working hard to achieve their goals.

I
f you have been on campus recently, it is likely that you have noticed
some changes in the landscape of our school. In early October, the first
phase of the Enlighten, Inspire & Strengthen campaign kicked off as we
broke ground on the improvements to our track and field facility known
as the Austin Street Athletic Complex. is is a very exciting time for our
school, our faculty and staff, and our student-athletes. e new and updated
facilities and equipment will play an important role as we continue to strive
for excellence in all aspects of our students’ IWA experience, build upon our
growing athletic tradition, and train champions.
We are grateful for those who have given their time, treasure, and talents
to this project thus far. Our ability to undertake such a project is a testament
to the support and generosity of our IWA family, and we look forward to
the completion of this first phase of an ongoing multi-year campaign. We
currently have commitments in excess of two million dollars, including
funds pledged and in process of payment from individuals, foundations, the
Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, as well as Academy
resources in reserve. e projected improvements will range in cost from
$4.3 million dollars to $4.9 million dollars depending on increases in
construction cost over the next few years.
Fully realizing the campaign goals and completing all three phases of the
project will depend on continuing the campaign momentum and building on
the solid foundations that have been set. For more information about the
campaign please review our campaign video, produced by Matt McClung,
Class of 2012, at the following link: http://www.iwacc.org/events/eis.html

FALL 2012
INTRODUCING OUR NEW VISION, MISSION, AND CORE VALUES
OUR VISION
To Become an Image of Christ Within Our Community. To extend the legacy of the Sisters of the
Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, as leaders, partners, and advocates for our students and
the adults who serve them; and to provide a community where all may grow in Christian whole-
ness and bear witness to the presence and love of Christ among us.
OUR MISSION
To Reect Jesus the Teacher. We form students in a loving and challenging environment where
the individual gifts of every student are recognized, celebrated, and developed as a reflection of
Christ.
OUR CORE VALUES
Faith: Belief in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, and His message of love for the world
Dignity: Respect for the worth of every person and for life in all its forms, with special concern for the poor
Compassion: Love, concern, and understanding in service of life-long learning
Integrity: Honesty, justice, and consistency in all relationships
Dedication: The pursuit of high standards of performance among teachers, students, and the school community
Gratitude: Acceptance, nurturing, and celebration of individual gifts and talents
Service: Recognition of God’s blessings and commitment to sharing them with others in school, family,
Church, and community
N
early 142 years ago, Incarnate Word Academy was
created on a foundation that blended a rich history
with a compelling vision for the future. e Sisters
of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament understood the
importance of education and faith as pillars for forming young
people and preparing them for a life of service and purpose.
Since its beginning, IWA has operated in many buildings, seen
the tenure of many gifted leaders, administrators and teachers,
and graduated thousands of students who have made a difference
in our community. rough it all, the core purpose of IWA
has been firmly anchored in the charism of the Sisters. As the
language of our society has evolved, so has the language of our
guiding philosophy.
What follows is the articulation of the Vision, Mission, and
Core Values of Incarnate Word Academy. Its purpose is to unite
and focus all who would help us to achieve our goals and was
collaboratively created with the help of people from all areas
of our IWA community: Sisters, students, faculty, staff, board
members, alumni, and benefactors.
e Incarnate Word Academy School Board and the Sisters of
the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament are very pleased to
unveil our new statement of Vision, Mission, and Core Values.

then we have a great start on leading a life

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Cecilia Garcia Akers ‘70
Cecilia Garcia Akers ’70
– Cecilia is many things: she
is a proud graduate of IWA, a graduate of St.
Marys University (Biology) and the University
of Texas Medical Branch Galveston (Physical
erapy). She is wife to Jimmy, mother of Melina,
and grandmother of Savannah and Noah. She is
a physical therapist with a private practice in San
Antonio and specializes in Geriatric Orthopedics
and Neuromuscular Rehabilitation.
In addition to all of those many things, Cecilia
is an advocate. She has worked tirelessly to
preserve and promote the legacy of her father,
civil rights activist, Dr. Hector P. Garcia. Garcia
was a physician, surgeon, civil rights advocate,
community leader, political activist, and founder
of the American G.I. Forum. His contributions
in the Corpus Christi area and throughout the
country were significant in the areas of justice,
education, and health. anks to her passion
and perseverance, in May of 2009, the State
of Texas established the third Wednesday of
September as Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day. Incarnate
Word Academy Elementary and Montessori
celebrate the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Mass on
this day every year. Cecilia has promoted her
father’s legacy through speaking engagements
and has collaborated with the U.S. House of
Representatives, the Senate, the Texas State
Legislature, universities, documentarians, and
authors to continue to educate the public about
her father’s contributions to our society. rough
the promotion of her fathers legacy, she is
sending a strong motivational message to today’s
generation. One person can be a voice. One
person can be a change maker. One person can
make a dent in the Universe.

In Loving Memory
Dick McClure was a fine man, a model of compassion,
justice, and dedication. For me, he was an encouraging
presence. On the difficult days when it seemed like
the “new system” under the “new administration” was
being met with resistance, Dick would find his way
into my office to give an encouraging word. I thank
God for having had the opportunity to work with Dick
and I pray that all who knew him will be encouraged
to live lives of service to others by remembering and
modeling his example!
